Dissertation Data Analysis Plan: Decide Before You Collect Data
Choose analysis that fits the questions, design and measurement level.
Start with the purpose and requirements
Choose analysis that fits the questions, design and measurement level. This guide is a practical starting point, not a replacement for your supervisor’s instructions, university handbook or a journal’s current author guidelines. Requirements vary by discipline and stage, so confirm the applicable rules before drafting or revising your document.
Apply the approach to your document
Create a plan showing variables or themes, data sources and the analysis for each objective. Quantitative choices depend on the design, measurement and assumptions; qualitative choices depend on the question and analytical approach. Software selection comes after those decisions. Avoid collecting a large dataset without knowing how it addresses the question.
An illustrative example
Describing payment use may need frequency tables, while exploring experiences may require a qualitative coding approach. A correlation test cannot by itself show that a factor causes adoption. This example shows how to reason about the task; it is not a ready-made result, prescribed template or claim about a completed client project. Adapt the approach to your own evidence and approved requirements.
Checks before you move on
Work through these checks on your actual document. If a requirement is unclear, note the question for your supervisor, department or journal rather than guessing. Keep the original draft and a record of significant decisions so revisions remain traceable.
- Map analysis to objectives
- Check measurement levels
- Plan missing-data handling
- Distinguish descriptive and inferential claims
Prepare a dissertation-support enquiry
Share your programme, approved question, department instructions and current stage. State whether you need planning guidance, language editing, analysis explanation or formatting. Your supervisor’s academic direction takes priority over a generic guide. Do not send identifiable participant records or restricted organisational information when first asking about support.
Discuss scope and next steps
Academic Compass provides dissertation support from Fort, Mumbai for researchers and students across India. Use the Services & Pricing page to review the listed service and WhatsApp to discuss your stage, deadline and required help.
