Dissertation Research Questions and Objectives: Keep Them Aligned
Use research questions to define what you need to learn and objectives to describe how the study addresses it.
Start with the purpose and requirements
Use research questions to define what you need to learn and objectives to describe how the study addresses it. This guide is a practical starting point, not a replacement for your supervisor’s instructions, university handbook or a journal’s current author guidelines. Requirements vary by discipline and stage, so confirm the applicable rules before drafting or revising your document.
Apply the approach to your document
A good question is specific enough to guide evidence collection. Objectives should be observable actions such as describing, comparing or exploring, rather than vague intentions to understand everything. Map each objective to data and analysis. If no evidence can answer an objective, revise it before collecting data.
An illustrative example
A question about barriers to merchant adoption might lead to an objective of identifying perceived barriers through interviews. A separate objective to prove national economic impact would need a different design and evidence base. This example shows how to reason about the task; it is not a ready-made result, prescribed template or claim about a completed client project. Adapt the approach to your own evidence and approved requirements.
Checks before you move on
Work through these checks on your actual document. If a requirement is unclear, note the question for your supervisor, department or journal rather than guessing. Keep the original draft and a record of significant decisions so revisions remain traceable.
- Use clear action verbs
- Map every objective to evidence
- Remove unsupported causal aims
- Check alignment with the title
Prepare a dissertation-support enquiry
Share your programme, approved question, department instructions and current stage. State whether you need planning guidance, language editing, analysis explanation or formatting. Your supervisor’s academic direction takes priority over a generic guide. Do not send identifiable participant records or restricted organisational information when first asking about support.
Discuss scope and next steps
Academic Compass provides dissertation support from Fort, Mumbai for researchers and students across India. Use the Services & Pricing page to review the listed service and WhatsApp to discuss your stage, deadline and required help.
